Many of us have hung up our WFH slippers and headed back to the office over the last few months. Some of us have done so enthusiastically while others have dragged their heels, holding on for as long as possible to those yummy fresh lunches and mid-morning yoga stretches.
Whichever camp you fall into, it’s important to establish healthy habits now that you’re back in the office. It might seem challenging initially but all you need is a little creativity, organisation, and commitment. Plus some tips and tricks from The Entrepreneur which we’re pleased to share with you below… Easy!
- Have a healthy, balanced diet. Start the day with a good, filling breakfast and follow with a healthy lunch. If you don’t have healthy food providers close to work, get into the habit of preparing a packed lunch at home. Combat the temptation of sugary snacks by keeping an arsenal of your favourite healthy snacks at work – think nuts, fruit, wholegrain muffins, and yogurt.
Make a point of leaving your desk at lunchtime and having a stroll (and your lunch, if possible) outside. That way you can enjoy your yummy food and a proper brain break at the same time.
- Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and energetic. Keep a jug of water by your desk and serve yourself six to eight glasses every day.
- Limit your caffeine intake as much as you can handle!
- Maintain good posture including at your desk. The Health and Safety Executive[please link to: https://www.hse.gov.uk/msd/dse/good-posture.htm] has some great advice on how to set your workstation up to this end.
- Take quick, frequent breaks throughout the day. To optimise productivity, you should step away from your computer and go for a quick walk – even if it’s just around the office floor – at least every hour. Alongside your lunch break – which you should respect religiously – these ‘breathers’ will help you unlock creativity and improve concentration and performance.
- Keep your desk clean and tidy. Keep sanitising wipes handy, and use them to wipe the surface of your desk and keyboard – as well as your hands – regularly.
- Stay germ-free! Your hand sanitiser will help with this but don’t forget about all those other barrier gestures that Covid taught us. Throw away your single-use tissues after one use and avoid close contact with employees who have colds etc. And if you’re sick, stay at home to rest and recuperate. You’ll be back on a form much more quickly this way.
- Manage your stress levels. Ensure you get enough sleep every night and take regular exercise. Make time and space to see your friends and family, and to do the things that you love e.g., watching movies, reading books, and visiting museums. It’s easy for your pastimes to take a back seat when life is busy, but it’s precisely these things that will help you stave off stress and be productive, happy, and healthy at work.
