Best known for its incredible work to protect elephants, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. But they do much more than this.

Elephant mothers are notoriously some of the best mothers on Earth, exhibiting a range of remarkable behaviours that make them stand out in the animal kingdom. From their incredibly long pregnancies lasting nearly two years (University of Oxford) to their fiercely nurturing and protective instincts, elephant mothers play a vital role in shaping the lives of their offspring.
The Journey of Orphaned Elephants:
Many of the elephants in the care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have faced heart-breaking beginnings, orphaned due to various factors such as poaching, human-wildlife conflict, or natural disasters. Left vulnerable and alone, these young calves rely on the compassionate care provided by the dedicated team at the Trust to survive and thrive.
A Nurturing Partnership:
Moved by the plight of these orphaned elephants, ABL Recruitment forged a sponsorship with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, symbolizing our commitment to conservation and compassion. This adoption program has provided vital support for the care, rehabilitation, and eventual release of these elephants back into the wild.
From Orphan to Family:
Witnessing the elephants’ journey from orphan hood to family life is truly heart-warming. Elephant mothers, renowned for their fiercely nurturing and protective instincts, play a pivotal role in guiding and nurturing these orphaned calves. Over the years, we’ve seen remarkable transformations as orphaned elephants and rhinos, hand-reared through the Orphans’ Project and reintegrated into the wild, go on to become parents themselves. This highlights the profound impact of rescuing just one orphan on the entire species.
To date, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust joyfully welcomed 59 wild-born elephant calves, as their mothers, once orphaned and now thriving in the wild, chose to share their new bundles of joy by returning to the Reintegration Units sometime after giving birth. However, there are certainly many more wild-born babies, fathered by male orphans reintegrated into the wild, who have mated with female wild elephants. Additionally, there are two wild-born rhino calves, further underscoring the success and importance of our conservation efforts.
