Whether you’re finding yourself working from home more or just simply thinking about finding a new job, it might be time to update your CV.
With everything happening across the globe right now, we’re finding ourselves staying indoors a lot more and spending less time out and about. What does this mean for you? Well, with not spending as much time on public transport or travelling, you’re probably finding pockets of time where you don’t have a lot to do.
Why not fill this time by updating your CV? Contrary to popular behaviour, you don’t have to be actively seeking a new job to update your CV. It’s just best practice to always keep any resumes or CV’s updated and there are a few reasons why.
Being up to date with your documents is incredibly important because it’s an excellent opportunity for you to do some self-reflection. Often when you first start a job, there is a lot of structure and responsibilities you follow. As you adjust to your role and become an expert at what you do, you will find more responsibilities come your way, and you’ll be doing more outside of what you were initially brought in to do. Not only that but think about how much more training and experience you would have gained between your last job and your current one. Remember, this is normal for any job; your role will inevitably grow and evolve; this is all part of your development. It’s essential to update your CV to reflect the detail that highlights your biggest successes and the new skills you’ve developed. This will ensure you are adding more value to your CV, that way, should you find yourself in a situation where you want to pursue a new job opportunity, you are ready and prepared.
It’s time to change your way of thinking; updating your CV doesn’t have to be a negative thing. It’s a great reminder of your previous and current successes, as well as giving you an idea of how you want to progress within your career. On that same sentiment, it gives you a clear view of the areas of your skills and experience that you want to improve on.
So, while you’re currently finding you have a little more time, use it wisely and think about updating your CV/resume. The more frequently you do this, the less work you’ll need to do on it when you actually need to use it. You never know when your dream opportunity will come along, and you want to make sure you’re ready for it. Trust us; you’ll thank yourself for it later.
