It isn’t always appropriate to go to a temp agency to fill your skills gap, making it difficult for team leaders to know whether or not a temp is the right decision for them. We’ve been working in recruitment for over 30 years, so, in this blog post, we’ll answer whether or not going to a temp agency will be worth it for you. First, let’s consider the reasons you may need a temp…
Best cases to use a temp agency
There are several reasons businesses opt to hire temporary rather than permanent staff. For example, if you’re an international bank looking for someone to help organise a foreign trip, a firm looking for an interim credit controller, a team in need of 20 German speakers to start on a newly-won market research project, or an art gallery looking for an English speaking Administrator to cover sick leave.
The main three reasons to hire a temp are:
- Parental cover
- Holiday cover
- Short term projects
If you have a skills gap that you need to fill in your team, and you don’t have the time to go through the lengthy recruitment process, using a temp agency can save you lots of valuable time and money.
What do temp agencies provide?
Working with a good temp agency should enable you to fill skill gaps with talented candidates immediately whilst removing the headache of endless amounts of admin.
Speed and quality
At ABL Recruitment, we provide quality and speed by accurately matching candidates with the right skills for the job to teams needing extra resources. All of our temps have a second language which benefits businesses in many ways, including improved communication and problem-solving skills. We are consistently keeping our temp pool fresh via a proactive recruitment process so that we always have talented candidates ready to go.
Work eligibility checks
Hiring a temp via an agency takes all of the admin, or let’s face it, the headache, out of recruitment. We only shortlist candidates with the appropriate work eligibility and references and send over CVs in as little as two hours.
How much do agencies charge for temps?
There is no one set price when it comes to hiring a temp agency to plug your short-term skill gaps. The cost varies according to several factors including:
- Type of job
- Level of job
- Languages required
- Difficulty finding appropriate talent
- Urgency of the role
We pay your temp directly and charge you an agreed hourly rate based on these factors. This rate includes an admin fee and statutory costs (i.e. Holiday Pay and National Insurance Contributions). That’s all. You only pay for the work that has been done. We also offer the option to payroll if you prefer.

Where might a temp agency not be useful?
There are very few instances where a temp agency won’t be useful. If you find yourself in a spot where you need to hire a talented temp to plug skills gaps in your team, then using a temp agency will be beneficial. However, temp agencies are not the right fit for businesses who:
- Don’t have a defined job to hire
- Don’t want to pay an agency fee
- Want to advertise and assess the quality of ad responses themselves
So is it worth going to a temp agency? If none of the points listed above applies to you, then yes, it is worth going to a temp agency to fill your short-term skills shortage.
