LinkedIn is the biggest business platform in the world. Hands-down and by a long shot. So if you’re not already working in this particular virtual room to support your job search, then perhaps you should be. There’s a world of opportunity out there…. and a world of competing job searchers. If you decide to take the plunge, you’ll need to make your profile shine and network efficiently.
According to bestselling management author and CNBC contributor, Suzy Welch, a little effort can go a long way. Please see below for her top tips on how to make your LinkedIn profile stand out, as published here.
- Highlight your soft skills, e.g., communication, adaptability and leadership. These are the qualities that make people great team members and yet they are often overlooked in LinkedIn profiles. So don’t just think about your technical skills. Think about what makes you a great person to work with.
- Leverage your connections. The business world is all about relationships. Welch claims that, with mutual connections being the main source of job opportunities on LinkedIn, you should invest time researching your second-degree connections. Be strategic about who you reach out to.
- Eliminate words that are so over-used that they’ve become meaningless, like ‘results-oriented’ and ‘passionate.’ Replace these text criminals with words and phrases that have concrete, genuine meaning. Use clear language to describe the projects you’ve worked on and the outcomes. Remember that your LinkedIn profile shouldn’t be a replica of your CV, but a more focused version that summarises your career story and showcases your personality.
Implement the above tips, says Welch, and your dream job might just come to find you.
